Q&A with Marli

What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?

I'm a sucker for any Disney movie. Hercules is one of my all time favorites!

What is your favorite children's book and why?

I love reading "This is a Gift for You" and "The Wonderful Things You Will Be." The words and illustrations are so beautiful, these are a favorite in my house.

What was your favorite childhood toy?

Original Polly Pockets were definitely a top pick growing up, I was very into imaginative play as a kid. I also loved building with Lincoln logs!

Who is your greatest inspiration and why?

My son has an underlying health condition that requires regular blood work and imaging under anesthesia. He really takes it all in stride, and I am in awe of his bravery, resilience and humor.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

I'm a huge foodie and love trying new restaurants, from cute hole-in-the-walls to bucket list Michelin star restaurants. I also love watching and performing in musical theater (before having kids, of course!). My favorite musical is Little Shop of Horrors.

What inspired you to work in pediatrics?

I was inspired to work in pediatrics because I've always been drawn to the resilience, honesty and curiosity of children. There's something incredibly meaningful about being part of a family's most vulnerable moments and helping guide them through both challenges and milestones. Pediatrics lets me blend science with compassion, and I feel privileged to support healthy beginnings that can shape an entire lifetime!

What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?

I connect with patients and families by brining warmth, humor and a genuine sense of relatability to every encounter. As someone actively raising a young family myself, I understand the real-life challenges parents face, which helps me to meet them with empathy rather than judgment. I use clear, down-to-earth communication, a little levity when it's welcome, and a collaborative approach that makes families feel heard and supported. These qualities allow me to build trust quickly and create a positive, meaningful rapport with both kids and their caregivers.

How do you accommodate patients with special needs?

Prior to Coastal Kids, I spent time in neurology at Children's Hospital Los Angeles working with complex medical patients . I accommodate kids with special needs by slowing, down, meeting them where they are, and adapting the visit to fit their comfort level and ability. I work closely with families to learn what helps their child feel safe and understood, and I always try to create an environment that's calm, flexible, and respectful of their unique needs.
