Q&A with Dr. Dostanic-Rakic

What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?

My favorite animated movies are Bambi, Finding Nemo, and Happy Feet.

What is your favorite children's book?

My favorite children's books are: Heidi by Johanna Spyri, White Fang by Jack London, The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. I like adventurous books.

What was your favorite childhood toy?

My favorite toys were dolls with cloth bodies and plastic heads, two dolls that I got from cousins from America, jump rope, ball games, and sleighs for winter.

Who is your greatest inspiration?

My inspiration was our family physician, who did home visits, and my pediatrician, in whose group practice I started my first job as a pediatrician. Also, my parents, who both have been teachers and encouraged me to study again, become an American pediatrician, and complete my second pediatric residency training in the US.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

I am married with two adult daughters—both college graduates, and one currently in medical school. I enjoy traveling, skiing, baking, beach walks, concerts, dancing, and spending time with my family.

What inspired you to work in pediatrics?

Being a pediatrician is the most meaningful work I can imagine. I feel privileged to walk alongside children as they grow—from their first days of life through childhood and adolescence—and to support families during both joyful and challenging moments.

I love the energy, honesty, and resilience of children, and I value the trust that develops over years of care. It is deeply fulfilling to provide continuity, to listen, to guide, and to educate families so they feel confident in understanding and managing their child’s health. I truly love my work and the connection it brings with every patient and family I meet.

What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?

What sets me apart is my focus on building long-term relationships with children and their families. I believe trust is the foundation of good pediatric care. I take time to listen, explain clearly, and involve parents in decision-making. My goal is to make families feel heard, supported, and comfortable at every visit.
