Q&A with Dr. Amin

What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?

Aladdin and Encanto

What is your favorite children's book and why?

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom because it reminds me of when my kids were young and the hours we would spend reading together.

What was your favorite childhood toy?

My Cabbage Patch Kid!

Who is your greatest inspiration and why?

My special needs patients are a source of great inspiration to me. Their tenacity and resilience is second to none, not to mention a great reminder as to why I do what I do.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

Running, traveling and spending time with my family

What inspired you to work in pediatrics?

Simply put, kids are my jam! They are curious, so full of life and so incredibly fun to be around. It's a joy to spend my days with them, as they often remind me to cherish the little things and not sweat the big stuff too much. Between my love of science and my love for children, becoming a pediatrician was the perfect career choice for me.

What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?

In fostering a relationship with my patients and their parents, I think it is important to listen first. I begin each visit by asking open ended questions, so my patient or their parents can express their concerns freely.

As we narrow down the problem at hand, I try to educate my patients and their parents as to what I believe is going on and why the next steps are necessary. I welcome feedback and if a certain plan of care doesn't sit well with a patient or parent, I am not afraid to pivot and try a different approach.

How do you accommodate patients with special needs?

Having done 6 years of pediatric training (residency and fellowship) at Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA, I learned very early on in my career how to take care of medically complex and special needs patients with compassion and thoroughness. I have maintained that skill throughout my time in private practice, helping parents organize their children's medical care efficiently without losing site of important details.
