What inspired you to work in pediatrics?
I love children and felt a calling on my life to work in pediatrics since I myself was a child. My Aunt was a NICU nurse and observation of her career and how she helped infants, inspired me to want to pursue a career in pediatrics. Over the years, this has developed into a passion for educating and helping the next generation make healthy choices and become their best self.
What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?
I love the relationship that a clinician has with their patient and families; it is my priority when providing care, to establish a bond of trust with families. It is so important to address the emotional and physical needs of the child and their caregivers. I take a more holistic approach to medical care, focusing on the entire person and not just the ailment that they are experiencing. I try to incorporate well being, mental health, and overall healthy lifestyle in all aspects of care. Children are affected by everything around them and to me, it is extremely important to incorporate the parents/caregivers well being and expectations into the treatment plan for their child. With adolescents and young adults, it is even more important to instill in them a confidence to be the best person they can and to give them the skills and education needs to help them make better choices for their health.
How do you accommodate patients with special needs?
Every patient is different and requires adaptation and a different technique to address their needs. No child is the same as another, therefore I make sure to understand the situation, challenge, or "special need" a child may have before approaching their medical care. This might include changing the environment, changing my placement in the room, spending extra time playing or earning a childs trust; adjusting how I examine or approach the situation is essential to make both the caregiver and child feel most comfortable during their visit.
